About

Marc-Olivier Gasser (agr., Ph.D) is an agronomist. He earned a bachelor's degree in bio-agronomy (1987), a master's degree in soils (1991) and a doctorate in soils (2000) from Université Laval. During his time as a researcher at Université Laval from 1988 to 2004, he acquired considerable expertise in a number of areas, including soil science, soil conservation, livestock manure recycling, and water quality in agricultural settings. He then moved on to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada as a postdoctoral fellow in 2005. In 2006 Marc-Olivier joined IRDA as a researcher, where he focuses on the management of soils, water, and organic fertilizers.

Area(s) of Expertise

  • Soil physics
  • Drainage and runoff water quality in connection with farm fertilizer management and soil conservation practices
  • Nitrogen flow monitoring
  • Characterization of farm fertilizers and evaluation of their fertilizing value
  • Agri-environmental development of industrial biomass crops

Artificial intelligence - Development of a decision support system to optimize alfalfa yield and nutritional value in relation to soil health

This project aims to develop a digital decision support tool to improve the nutritional quality and yield of alfalfa from analyses of the nutritional quality of forages, based on its relationship with soil fertility and health, while including the other pedoclimatic parameters that define alfalfa production conditions.
